Interventional Radiology
Interventional Radiology (IR) uses guidance by radiology imaging modalities to perform procedures though very small incisions in the skin. Procedures include but are not limited to biopsies, drainage of fluid or infected collections, and placement of devices to access veins for therapy. In addition, treatments for cancer may include direct therapies to treat tumors or mark tumors for radiation treatments and opening of structures that may be blocked by tumors. Treatment of many types of acute bleeding is also offered. Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE) can be used as an alternative to hysterectomy for treatment of fibroids. In many cases IR procedures can replace or minimize more invasive surgical procedures to reduce risk and shorten recovery times.
