Positron Emission Tomography - PET/CT
PET scanning uses a special radiopharmaceutical that tracks the degree
of body tissue metabolism. It is particularly useful for detection of many
types of cancer and to check for tumor spread. It is also useful to assess
for tumor response in certain types of tumors after treatment to better guide future therapy.
Our scanner combines the PET examination with a multi-slice CT examination to better pinpoint any areas of PET abnormality.
Prior to your scan you will receive an injection of the radiopharmaceutical and then rest quietly for a period prior to the study to limit activity in normal tissues and allow time for the agent to localize in abnormal tissue if present. In some cases you may also receive an injection for the CT component during the exam.
